Urban Fashion Making a Push into the Mainstream

Fashion has long been a widely accepted determinant of what kinds of elements are popular throughout popular culture. In conjunction with this fact, many people look back on a particular era of fashion to reiterate and relate to the corresponding period and remember a significant event. As with most things that make their way into the mainstream, popular fashion comes and goes with the ages — ever evolving to correlate with the times and the demands of what popular culture desires. Never has this concept been more prevalent than it is now with as quickly as information travels. Through media and entertainment venues, new fashion and styles are born seemingly overnight, constantly adding new twists to the mainstream scene.

One particular fashion that has vastly grown in popularity as a direct result of media and information outlets is modern urban clothing lines. These clothing lines began making their way into the mainstream as hip hop began capturing the admiration of major television and radio audiences. The popular hip hop artists of this movement ventured to collaborate with innovative minds in the fashion industry in order to bring to light the sought after styles commonly portrayed by them during performances or in music videos. One particular line that has been developed through this process is the Apple Bottom clothing line; launched by rap artist Nelly, his cousin Yomi, and a friend, Ian. The Apple Bottom clothing line helped to fill a void in the women’s urban fashion industry; introducing clothing that posed a correct fit, particularly for curvy women, while simultaneously being stylish and up to par with modern fashion.

As the clothing industry continues to evolve, and the influence of the media remains strong in popular culture, celebrity clothing lines, such as Apple Bottom, as well as urban clothing in general will continue to flourish and influence popular fashion.
